DPF: regeneration and cleaning of the particulate filter

The DPF traps soot, which the engine burns off from time to time during regeneration. On a construction machine regeneration often has no chance to finish: long idling, short work cycles and switching the machine off mid-cycle. The symptoms are the DPF warning light, more and more frequent regenerations, loss of power and limp mode.

First we check whether the problem is the filter itself or the differential pressure and exhaust temperature sensors. Then we run a service regeneration with a tester or clean the filter; a filter that is cracked or melted needs replacing.

AdBlue: warning light, faults and power derate

The AdBlue system doses urea solution into the exhaust upstream of the SCR catalyst. When the controller detects a fault – poor fluid quality, a pump or dosing module fault, a failed heater or NOx sensor – it switches on the warning light and after a while limits the machine's power. We diagnose the whole system and repair or replace the faulty part. Use fluid that meets ISO 22241; AdBlue freezes at about −11 °C, so heater faults are common in winter.

SCR: catalyst and NOx sensors

The controller judges SCR efficiency from the NOx sensors before and after the catalyst. A "low SCR efficiency" fault can come from poor AdBlue, a contaminated dosing module, a faulty sensor or the catalyst itself. Measurements and a dosing test tell these causes apart before expensive parts are replaced.

EGR: exhaust gas recirculation valve and cooler

The EGR valve returns part of the exhaust to the intake. A valve clogged with carbon sticks, causing loss of power, smoke and faster DPF clogging. We clean or replace the valve, check its control and the tightness of the EGR cooler.

Machines, not passenger cars

We work on exhaust aftertreatment in construction, agricultural and industrial machinery, where filters, AdBlue tanks and control differ from those in cars. Our DPF cleaning service is for machines, not passenger cars.

Why we do not disable DPF or AdBlue

Removing or switching off DPF, AdBlue/SCR or EGR by software is against the law, causes problems at inspections and handovers and reduces the resale value of the machine. A repaired system lets the machine work at full power legally, so we only diagnose, clean, regenerate and repair.

Frequently asked questions

How much does DPF cleaning on a construction machine cost?

It depends on whether a service regeneration is enough or the filter has to be removed and cleaned, on access to the filter on the machine and on travel. We quote before work starts. See our pricing and travel principles.

Is it legal to disable AdBlue on a machine?

No. Removing or disabling AdBlue/SCR, DPF or EGR is against the law. We do not offer it; we repair the system so it works as the manufacturer intended.

Do you clean DPFs on passenger cars?

We specialise in construction, agricultural and industrial machinery. Car aftertreatment systems are different and we do not work on them.

Do you regenerate and clean DPF filters on site?

Yes. We come to the machine, read the fault codes and check the DPF sensors (differential pressure, exhaust temperature). Then we choose the fix: a service regeneration, cleaning the filter or, if the filter is damaged, replacing it. Scope and cost are agreed before work starts.

The machine goes into limp mode because of an AdBlue or SCR fault. What do you do?

We run computer diagnostics on the AdBlue/SCR system: pump and dosing module, NOx sensors, fluid level and quality, heaters and wiring. We repair or replace the faulty part, clear the codes and check the system works, so the machine is back to full power.

Do you service the EGR system?

Yes. We diagnose the EGR system, clean carbon from the valve or replace it, and check its control. A sticking EGR valve often causes power loss, smoke and faster DPF clogging.

When should I call about the DPF?

When the DPF warning light is on, regenerations become more frequent or do not finish, or the machine loses power or goes into limp mode. Early diagnostics improve the chance that a regeneration or cleaning is enough instead of a new filter.

Do you remove or disable DPF, AdBlue or EGR?

No. Removing or disabling DPF, AdBlue/SCR and EGR systems is against the regulations. We only do diagnostics, cleaning, regeneration and repair, so the exhaust aftertreatment works as the manufacturer intended.

Which machines and brands do you work on?

Excavators, loaders, backhoe loaders, rollers, pavers and other diesel machines fitted with DPF, SCR/AdBlue and EGR, including Caterpillar, JCB, Volvo, Komatsu, Liebherr, Bomag, Hamm and Wirtgen.

How quickly can you arrive in case of breakdown?

We are available Monday-Friday 7:00-17:00. For standard breakdowns - 24-48 business hours. For urgent breakdowns causing machine downtime we offer express service - same business day arrival.

Is the service mobile?

Yes, we have fully equipped mobile service teams. We come directly to the construction site or machine location with complete diagnostic equipment.

What machine brands do you service?

We service all leading brands: Wirtgen, Vögele, Hamm, Bomag, Dynapac, Ammann, John Deere, New Holland, Claas, Fendt, Valtra, Steyr, Doosan, Liebherr, JCB, Volvo, Komatsu, Caterpillar, Takeuchi, Bobcat, Doppstadt, Terex and many others.

Do you use original spare parts?

We encourage customers to purchase required parts themselves - this way they can build their own discount packages with their suppliers and maximize benefits from regular purchases. We focus on professional diagnostics and repairs.

How does the repair process work?

Report → Initial diagnostics → Service arrival → On-site diagnostics → Quote → Repair → Tests.

Can I schedule a preventive inspection?

Yes, we offer comprehensive preventive inspections according to manufacturer recommendations. For companies with larger machinery fleets we prepare dedicated service packages.

What is the cost of service travel?

We calculate travel cost individually depending on location. We will provide the exact amount before the visit.

Do you work on weekends?

We normally work Monday-Friday 7:00-17:00. For regular customers in case of breakdowns we provide emergency support 24/7, including weekends and holidays.

How can I get a repair quote?

You can get a quote after initial diagnostics by phone or after detailed on-site diagnostics. We always present transparent calculation before starting work.

DPF, AdBlue and EGR – good to know

1

A DPF clogs faster when the machine idles for long periods or works in short cycles: the exhaust never gets hot enough for passive regeneration.

2

An interrupted DPF regeneration, for example switching the machine off mid-cycle, is a common cause of a blocked filter and limp mode.

3

Contaminated or diluted AdBlue can damage the SCR pump and dosing module. Use fluid that meets ISO 22241.

4

A faulty EGR valve increases soot in the exhaust, so the DPF clogs faster.

5

Differential pressure and exhaust temperature sensors control DPF regeneration. A sensor fault can trigger errors even when the filter itself is fine.
